3D-GIS in the Cloud

Sivan Design’s 3D-GIS is a cloud based application that provides GIS experts, professional users and public users with 3D views and 3D analysis tools, enabling them to use spatial information in a Smart 3D City environment. Infrastructure, cadastre and city planning GIS in 3D enable users to view and analyze its data in detail and precision that cannot be achieved in 2D. Smart 3D City environment provided by the 3D-GIS application enables real world views that improve user orientation and increase ability to perform tasks and manage city planning, infrastructures and cadastral data.
Running as a cloud based application relieves the client (user) from the need to ever install the application and avoids the need to acquire high-performance processing hardware. The processor demanding tasks of 3D rendering and data calculations are being performed on the cloud, freeing the client from handling them. Therefore the application can run on any web browser and is also available as an iPad App.
3D-GIS in the Cloud offers high flexibility and support for existing spatial information. Various data sources can be used to create the 3D environment, from spatial information saved in files (e.g. Shape file) to information stored in databases (e.g. SQL Server) all are rendered into a high quality and detailed 3D visualization.
Some examples for user needs that 3D GIS provide are:
- Underground infrastructure coordination and planning
- Emergency and accident resolution
- Analysis of sight distances for road improvements
- Environment / Scenery development
- City’s skylines analysis
- 3D cadastre
3D-GIS Products Range
Sivan Design’s 3D-GIS application offers a range of solutions tailored for every need - Roads 3D-GIS, Cadastre 3D-GIS, and Infrastructure 3D-GIS. Each solution offers related information only, thus providing an intuitive and easy to use application.
Roads 3D-GIS is targeted to improve the decision making process encountered by transportation authorities. The application displays high quality 3D visualization of roads, highways, interchanges, flyovers, etc. and upper / underground infrastructure such as water and sewage pipelines, utility, gas, cables, etc. each segment of the above information can include specific spatial related information.
Cadastre 3D-GIS main objective is to support upper and underground cadastre information. The application displays in realistic 3D spatial lots, parcels and sub parcels while preserving accurate three-dimensional displacement distances, boundary buffers, expropriations, etc.
Infrastructure 3D-GIS convert complex infrastructure meshes into an easy to understand visualization. Overlapping pipes depth differences is immediately noticeable. Its main target uses include infrastructure coordination, avoiding breakdown maintenance, efficient preventive maintenance that eventually results in collision free planning.
Thorough Long Term Research and Development
Three Dimensional GIS initiatives are available throughout the world and are found in different maturity levels. The 3D GIS is unique because it was developed for infrastructure support and management by people who understand infrastructure. The high quality 3D view, with its high precision is of great importance for those who deal with infrastructure. It also includes special tools to handle and query infrastructure spatial information.. On top of the added value gained from the extended visualization capabilities, the software provides various 3D querying and analyzing tools that are not supported by traditional 2D systems.

For over five years, Sivan Design has been conducting a thorough research to originate an extensive design description for its 3D GIS software. The research main goals were a) to comprehend future geospatial design trends; b) identify rural and urban requirements when designing in 3D; c) define and standardize new measurement units to support 3D spatial needs; d) predict, distinguish and suggest methods to overcome challenges in displaying 3D geospatial information.
The research was conducted in tight cooperation with Israel’s Department of Public Works, the Survey of Israel, and several leading urban planning firms in Israel. The requirements and trends that were presented by these parties, combined with the research results, formed a Software Design Description (SDD) document which was the basis for the Sivan Design’s 3D GIS software development. These requirements are gradually implemented into the software according to the SDD.
